SOVEREIGNTY GARDENS
A Community Grow & Share Initiative
Sovereignty Gardens encourages residents of York Region to cultivate their own edible gardens and donate a portion of their harvest to local food banks through our program partner, The Food Bank of York Region. We want to encourage individuals to rediscover how contributions through local backyard farming can do so much to feed our communities.
1/8 households across the country are food insecure; this represents over 4.4 million Canadians. With the impact of COVID-19, this number is growing. Food banks are still reporting an increase in demand and struggling to meet needs. It is imperative that we come together now to support local families through collective action.
To participate in the program, please drop off your fruits and vegetables to The Food Bank of York Region. Upon drop off, please let staff know that the food is for the Sovereignty Gardens program. The program runs from March 20 - October 16.
Share your backyard gardens with us! Tag us @sovgardens to have your garden featured on Instagram.

DID YOU KNOW?
During WWI and WWII, the Government of Canada asked citizens to grow food in support of our soldiers and allied forces; this effort was known as Victory Gardens. By the end of WWII, there were over 200,000 Victory Gardens in Canada, which produced 57,000 tonnes of vegetables.
